WhatsApp and Instagram Restored After Widespread Meta Outages

WhatsApp and Instagram services have been restored following a global outage on Wednesday that disrupted access to several Meta-owned platforms.

Users across the UK, Europe, Asia, Australia, South America, and the US reported issues starting around 18:00 GMT, according to Downdetector. The outage affected over 22,000 Facebook users and more than 18,000 WhatsApp users, with problems ranging from complete inaccessibility to unresponsive feeds.

Meta acknowledged the disruption, citing a "technical issue" and assuring users that its teams were working swiftly to resolve it. By late evening, the majority of services had resumed normal operations.

"Thanks for bearing with us! We're 99% of the way there – just doing some last checks," Meta announced on X (formerly Twitter).

WhatsApp and Instagram also reassured users as they came back online, saying, "Happy chatting!" and "Thanks for the wait," respectively.

This incident marks another significant outage for Meta, which faced its largest disruption in 2021 when Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram were down for nearly six hours.

Despite the restoration of services, Meta has not confirmed if all issues have been fully resolved, leaving some users awaiting complete stability on their platforms.

The brief outage highlights the reliance on Meta's apps, which include Facebook, boasting over three billion monthly active users worldwide.
